Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Balanced Approach: Macroscale and Microscale
Published in Hardcover by W H Freeman & Co. (December, 1997)
Authors: Jerry R. Mohrig, Christina Noring Hammond, Terence C. Morrill, and Douglas C. Neckers
Average review score:

Wonderfully eloquent
I am an aspiring chemist; this book has made it possible for me to explore many different organic experiments in a well planned out and careful manner. Jerry is a close personal friend of mine and I can personnaly vouch that he has dedicated his life to perfecting this manual. A masterpiece! If I could I would give this book a million stars out of five. Of an interesting note is the Acylation and Alkylation of Aromatic Compounds (Experiment #18). This three part lab is perfectly suited for the home chemistry lab as well as teaching your students to play with Chemicals. Uses chemicals availible through the Aldrich lab manual ranging from the relatively nontoxic to the volatile and flammable suspected carcinogens. Buy one for yourself and one for someone special you love!

The only thing that was (a little) disappointing was that the so-called "CD-rom" didn't actually have any music on it. I popped it into my car discman and no tunes. What's up with that? Maybe in the next edition...I'd recommend something from the Karate Kid soundtrack, maybe just use the hole thing. Word to your mother.

Explorations in Rhetoric: Studies in Honor of Douglas Ehninger
Published in Textbook Binding by Scott Foresman & Co (January, 1982)
Author: Ray E. McKerrow
Average review score:

Explorations on how we set out to build a rhetorical theory
As Marilyn J. Vangraber's dedication points out, the essays collected in this volume is less "in memory of" and more "because of" Douglas Ehninger (1913-79). The nine essays are all written by students and colleagues of Ehninger, who had ended his distinuished career at the University of Iowa: (1) Michael McGuire, "The Structural Study of Speech," synthesizes mechanical and empirical models of reality as they converge in language, which therefore becomes the nexus of both empirical and social reality; (2) Michael Calvin McGee, "A Materialist's Conception of Rhetoric," argues for a materialist approach that would dervie rhetorical theory entirely from practice; (3) Samuel D. Watson, Jr., "Polanyi's Epistemology of Good Reason," offers another synthesis, this time of Michael Polanyi's views concerning human reason that gives to "knowledge" more reliability than can actually be justified; (4) Richard A. Cherwitz & James W. Hikins, "John Stuart Mill's Doctrine of Assurance as a Rhetorical Epistemology," brings Mill into the debate to consider how the belief system accepted in social reality represents more than mere consensus; (5) Bruce E. Gronbeck, "On Classes of Inference and Force," makes a compelling argument for how premises can "force" conclusions and looks at the nature of inference-making; (6) Donovan J. Ochs, "Cicero's "Topica": A Process View of Invention"considres the problem of how rhetorical knowledge is generated and of how argument is formed from the historical perspective of Cicero's writings; (7) Eric Wm. Skopec, "The Theory of Expression in Selected Eighteenth-Century Rhetorics," looks at the rhetoric-as-expression emphasis developed by the Romantic movememnt in Britain; (8) Ray E. McKerrow, "Whately's Theory of Rhetoric," reasses teh importance of Richard Whateley in terms of not only his influence on 20th-century views of argument but also the nature of rhetorical knowledge; (9) James L. Golden & Josina M. Makau, "Perspective on Judicial Reasoning," considers rhetorical knowledge from the specific perspective of legal reasoning, using both Toulmin and Perelman to critique the decisions of hte Supreme Court. In his introduction, Michael Osborn makes the case for what Ehninger would have thought of the arguments presented in this volume, which, rather surprisingly, manage to address a common theme. It is a shame this book is out of print, because it contains several of the better think pieces on rhetoric since the writers were unencumbered by the necessity of making journal editors happy.

Eye of the Storm: The Album Graphics of Storm Thorgerson With Peter Curzon and Jon Crossland
Published in Paperback by Sanctuary Publishing (December, 1999)
Authors: Storm Thorgerson, Peter Curzon, Jon Crossland, John Crossland, and Douglas Adams
Average review score:

Arrange Your *Eye* Examination Soon
Storm Thorgerson is best known, of course, as the premiere album art designer with a 30-year association with Pink Floyd. If you became fond of his work because you're a PF fan, you don't want to miss this book just because Floyd art isn't the primary focus this time around. Storm's writing in Mind Over Matter was very entertaining, but in Eye of the Storm he's assumed an even more relaxed, personally revealing style. His character comes through more clearly, and he's a very engaging character indeed!

Among the book's features is an art concept that was originally intended for a Hey You 1994 concert video. He confesses that the Tree of Half Life concept didn't begin as Pink Floyd art. It tells more than his previous books about his talented associates, for example Keith Breeden (who is unfortunately now retired from the business).

The book is compelling entertainment, and it fills a gap for some of us who missed seeing his intriguing work for less famous bands than Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. My favorite at the moment is the Catherine Wheel art he selected for this book's cover.

Faces of Fear: Encounters With the Creators of Modern Horror
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (December, 1985)
Author: Douglas E. Winter
Average review score:

The V. C. Andrews interview was very revealing
It's too bad this book is out of print, it's got many great personal interviews, particularly with V. C. Andrews, since this was the only real interview she ever did. It's really in-depth and you get to know the kind of lifestyle she led.A necessity along with V. C. Andrews: A Critical Companion and The V. C. Andrews Trivia and Quiz Book. Also check out your closest college library for a 1980 issue of people magazine that has some big pictures and a little article about her. It's great.

Factories in the Field: The Story of Migratory Farm Labor in California
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (21 February, 2000)
Authors: Carey McWilliams and Douglas C. Sackman
Average review score:

Factories in the Field
An excellent book for anyone interested in California History, US History, the Great Depression or the history of corporate agriculture. Originally released the same year as Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, McWilliams' book relates the history of not only migrant farm labor in California, but the corporate farm as well. Having included extensive background on California's 19th Century land grab, McWilliams presents a comprehensive look at corporate agriculture, including its effect on various labor groups and the economy of the State of California. Written with a definite bias toward the underdog (the migrant worker), Factories in the Field nevertheless provides the reader with an understanding of the beginnings of corporate economy in California and its true beginnings in agriculture, including an explanation of the power of the ag growers--a political hot potato that continues in the state today.

Faith-Based Diplomacy: Trumping Realpolitik
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (March, 2003)
Author: Douglas Johnston
Average review score:

Why don't you own this book?!!
Faith-based Diplomacy, Trumping Realpolitik offers a fresh perspective on how to deal with religious militancy. It goes beyond traditional notions of power politics to get at the heart and soul of how to deal with religious terrorism, thus superseding in effectiveness Washington-centric notions of guns and missiles. The creativity of the authors offers much grist for policymakers to "think outside the box" of how traditional power politics are conducted and offers new insights into the process of conflict transformation. A very interesting, insightful, and helpful book for the politician, religious leader and educated layperson.

Family Tree Detective
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (September, 1999)
Authors: Ann Douglas and Stephen MacEachern
Average review score:

Everything the young genealogist needs to get started!
This book explains clearly and simply to kids how to get started researching their family tree. Ann Douglas delves into a bit of genetics and then talks about how kids can get started -- how to interview family members (including giving sample interview questions to use), tips on getting people's stories on audio or videotape, how to store their research, and gives great ideas on how to share the information learned with family members.

The bright, colorful illustrations give the book a fun look, and the charts throughout the book are very helpful.

Far Voyages
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (July, 1900)
Authors: Dougals Lepan and Douglas Lepan
Average review score:

Desire and love secretly fulfilled
Canadian poet Douglas LePan kept these tender poems of love and longing hidden for over 50 years from all but a few chosen colleagues. Luckily LePan was prevailed to preserve and finally to publish them, an act of incredible bravery for him. To quote a review elsewhere, "LePan likes to charge his writing with intensity. Both human and ordinary, magical and extraordinary, the poems of Far Voyages surge from a writer in his prime." Dr. LePan received the Governor General's Award for his novel The Deserter, and another for his volume of poetry, The Net and the Sword.
